Tarangire is the safari every guide quietly loves. Most itineraries give it half a day — we give it two — because in the dry season it holds Tanzania's largest elephant population and a density of game that rivals the Serengeti without the vehicle counts.

Discover Tarangire National Park

The park follows the Tarangire River, a perennial ribbon of water through a landscape of giant baobab and yellow-fever acacia. From July through October, herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, eland and wildebeest converge on the river — and the predators come with them.

It's also the best birding park in the country. Over 550 species are recorded here, including the bizarre kori bustard, the yellow-collared lovebird (a Tanzanian endemic), and the rufous-tailed weaver.

Wildlife in Tarangire National Park

  • Largest elephant population in northern Tanzania
  • Tree-climbing pythons (yes, really)
  • Big prides of dry-season lion
  • Leopard, cheetah, caracal
  • Fringe-eared oryx & gerenuk
  • 550+ bird species — the country's richest list

Every drive is different — sightings are never guaranteed, and your guide reads the bush as you go.

Excursions and activities in Tarangire National Park

  • Tarangire River drive

Follow the river south from Boundary Hill — the highest concentration of game in the park, especially in October.

  • Silale Swamp

Less visited southern circuit. Elephant bulls, lion prides, and the chance of wild dog.

  • Walking safari (Manyara Ranch & private concessions)

Outside the park boundary, on community-run conservancies, with an armed ranger. The slowest, most ground-level way to read the bush.

  • Night drive (Maramboi & Tarangire Treetops)

Permitted on the private concessions bordering the park — your only legal chance at aardvark, civet and bushbaby in the north.

Travel time to Tarangire National Park

  • Arusha → Tarangire gate: ~2.5 hours.

Travel tip from our guides about Tarangire National Park

Stay in the park, not in Mto wa Mbu town. The 45-minute pre-game-drive gate transfer kills your best light.

How long to stay? Most guests stay one night and feel rushed. Two nights gives you a full day on the southern circuit and a morning at the river — that's where the real density lives.

Best time to visit Tarangire National Park

Jun–Oct (dry season concentrates wildlife along the Tarangire River).

  • Jun–Oct: peak season. The river is a magnet for everything.
  • Nov–May: lush, beautiful, very quiet — but elephants disperse outside the park and game viewing is harder. A photographer's window for landscape.
