Arusha to Tarangire — into elephant country
After breakfast, your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel and you leave the bustle of town for open country. Roadside markets, grazing goats and distant Maasai homesteads give way to the baobabs of Tarangire National Park after about 2–2.5 hours. Once through the gate, raise the roof and begin looking along the river for elephant families, giraffes and zebra. Your guide sets an unhurried pace, allowing time to watch behaviour rather than simply tick off animals. Pause for a picnic lunch at a designated site, then continue exploring in the afternoon light before settling into your lodge or tented camp for dinner.
Tarangire is known for its elephant herds, ancient baobabs and varied woodland, with the Tarangire River providing an important dry-season water source. From about June to October, animals often gather near the remaining water, while greener months bring fresh vegetation and rewarding birdwatching. Lions may rest beneath trees, and colourful rollers are worth watching even when larger animals are out of sight. Keep binoculars and your camera within reach, and bring a light layer for the cooler drive home as the sun drops.
