Manyara is the smallest park on the northern circuit and the most varied. In 90 minutes you can drive from groundwater forest (blue monkeys, baboons, elephant) through acacia woodland into open floodplain on the edge of the soda lake.

Discover Lake Manyara National Park

It's most famous for two things: tree-climbing lions (the prides here regularly nap in acacia branches, behaviour rarely seen elsewhere) and the pink wash of greater and lesser flamingos on the lake — sometimes a million birds at once.

We treat Manyara as a half-day stop en route between Tarangire and the Crater, but it stands alone as a full-day birding trip.

Wildlife in Lake Manyara National Park

  • Tree-climbing lion
  • Massive troops of olive baboon
  • Elephant in the forest
  • Hippo, giraffe, blue monkey
  • Up to 1 million flamingos on the lake
  • 400+ bird species

Every drive is different — sightings are never guaranteed, and your guide reads the bush as you go.

Excursions and activities in Lake Manyara National Park

  • Groundwater forest drive

The first 30 minutes after the gate — dense, cool, dripping. Best chance of blue monkey and silvery-cheeked hornbill.

  • Hippo pool

Permanent hippo pod plus pelican, fish eagle and yellow-billed stork.

  • Treetop canopy walkway

A 370-metre suspended boardwalk through the forest canopy. Great for kids, vertigo-free.

One of the only national parks in Tanzania that allows after-dark drives. Civet, genet, bushbaby.

Travel tip from our guides about Lake Manyara National Park

After heavy rain the lake floods and the road past the hippo pool closes — ask us before booking a wet-season Manyara stop.

How long to stay? Half a day to a full day, en route to or from the Crater. One overnight in Mto wa Mbu if you want a dawn and a dusk drive.

Best time to visit Lake Manyara National Park
