Day 1

Welcome to Arusha — your safari begins

Karibu Tanzania! On arrival at your agreed meeting point, we welcome you and take you to your accommodation in Arusha. If you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the region's international gateway, allow about one hour for the transfer, with arrangements confirmed before booking. On a clear day, Mount Meru rises above the town, giving you a first glimpse of northern Tanzania's volcanic landscapes. Depending on your arrival time, settle into the garden, arrange lunch if needed or enjoy an optional gentle outing around town. Later, your guide introduces the route, listens to your wildlife interests and explains the longer driving days ahead. Dinner and a quiet evening give you time to rest before tomorrow's departure.

Arusha is the starting point for this varied northern circuit, linking Lake Manyara's forest, Ndutu's seasonal plains and a central Serengeti safari before Ngorongoro Crater. The town itself is lively, with markets, small businesses and farming landscapes around its edges. Keep binoculars, sun protection and any essential medication in your day bag rather than your main luggage. This first evening is also a useful moment to confirm dietary needs and ask your guide about the next morning's departure.

Day 2

Arusha to Lake Manyara — forest, lake and escarpment

After breakfast, leave Arusha and travel west towards Lake Manyara National Park, allowing about 2–2.5 hours to reach the park area before entry formalities. Roadside villages and cultivated land give way to the dramatic wall of the Great Rift Valley. Inside the park, your guide slows the pace beneath the groundwater forest, where baboons may gather beside the track and blue monkeys move through the canopy. Look between the trunks for elephants and pause to listen to the birds overhead. We follow accessible tracks towards lake viewpoints, enjoy lunch at a designated picnic site and continue exploring as conditions allow. Later, climb into the greener highlands around Karatu for dinner and your overnight stay.

Lake Manyara offers an intimate contrast to the broad plains ahead: forest, woodland and lake-edge habitats sit close together beneath the escarpment. Water levels and seasonal flooding influence which tracks are usable, while flamingo numbers vary with feeding conditions. The park is known for tree-climbing lions, but finding one is a matter of luck rather than an itinerary promise. Bring binoculars for birds partly hidden by foliage, and keep your camera ready for changing light as we move between shaded forest and open viewpoints.

Day 3

Karatu to Ndutu — into the southern plains

An early breakfast sets you up for a substantial journey from Karatu through the Ngorongoro highlands towards Ndutu. Allow about 5–7 hours on the road, depending on conditions, stops and the location of your camp. The changing scenery is part of the experience: cool, sometimes misty slopes gradually open into enormous grasslands, where distant animals can look like tiny marks against the horizon. Your guide explains the route as we travel, with breaks and lunch arranged along the way. If arrival time permits, explore Ndutu's woodland edges, lakes and plains before heading to camp. Dinner brings a welcome pause after the drive, with time to listen to the sounds of the surrounding bush.

Ndutu lies in the southern Serengeti ecosystem, including the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and is especially associated with the Great Migration calving season. January–March is usually the strongest period for seeing wildebeest herds here, often alongside zebra, though rainfall determines their movements. Predators may follow the herds, and patient watching is more rewarding than expecting a particular encounter. Outside the main migration period, the landscape still offers wildlife interest without the same concentrations. Carry a light layer for the highlands and keep sun protection accessible as the route drops towards the warmer plains.

Day 4

Ndutu to central Serengeti — the big-cat heartland

Set out early for wildlife viewing around Ndutu, when the cooler air invites you to watch the plains slowly come alive. Your guide works with recent sightings and the conditions on the ground rather than following a fixed animal checklist. We then travel towards central Serengeti, allowing about 3–5 hours of road travel in addition to stops and wildlife viewing. Open grassland gives way to the river valleys and rocky outcrops around Seronera. Watch for giraffes browsing, grazing herds and, with luck, lions resting near a kopje or a leopard in a tree. A packed lunch keeps the day flexible, and the afternoon is shaped around daylight and the journey to your accommodation. Settle in for dinner surrounded by the wider Serengeti landscape.

A central Serengeti safari is rewarding beyond the seasonal passage of the Great Migration because river corridors and varied habitats support resident wildlife. Kopjes are granite outcrops that offer shelter, shade and lookout points, so your guide checks them carefully without promising cats. Short grass can make distant animals easier to spot, while greener periods bring rich colours and more concealed subjects. Keep binoculars within reach and protect camera equipment from dust during the transfer; patience often reveals details that a quick photograph misses.

Day 5

Central Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater rim

Begin early with a final game drive along your departure route through central Serengeti. In the cool morning light, your guide may find giraffes feeding beside the track, grazing herds spreading across the grass or a lion resting after the night. There is time to appreciate the quieter scenes as well as look for predators before the road leads south towards the Ngorongoro highlands. Allow about 4–6 hours for the transfer, with additional time for wildlife viewing and breaks. Lunch is arranged along the route, and the landscape gradually changes from wide plains to cooler uplands. Rather than rushing a late crater descent, we reach your accommodation near the rim or in Karatu, according to your confirmed choice, for dinner and rest.

The journey connects two very different parts of Tanzania's northern circuit: Serengeti grasslands and the volcanic highlands surrounding Ngorongoro Crater. Higher ground can feel surprisingly chilly after the warmth of the plains, particularly when cloud settles around the rim. Tomorrow's dedicated crater visit is best approached with an early departure, so keep a warm layer ready tonight and prepare your day bag before dinner. Your guide will explain the morning arrangements and the timing needed for the final return to Arusha.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater game drive — return to Arusha

Make an early start after breakfast, carrying a packed lunch for your final wildlife day. Descend into Ngorongoro Crater as the steep walls reveal grassland, pools and patches of woodland below. Your guide follows permitted tracks, looking for buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and lions, while scanning distant areas for the much rarer black rhino. We pause at an authorised picnic site and continue wildlife viewing within the permitted visit time before climbing back into the highlands. The drive to your agreed Arusha drop-off typically takes about 4–5 hours from the crater area. This is a long finale, so any evening flight requires a separately confirmed transfer and a generous timing buffer rather than a tight connection.

Ngorongoro Crater's varied habitats support a remarkable concentration of wildlife within a dramatic volcanic caldera, although no individual species is guaranteed. The rim can be cold even when the floor warms later, so dress in layers and keep binoculars handy for animals well away from the road. For an international departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), allow about another hour from Arusha, subject to traffic, as well as check-in time. Confirm your flight schedule before booking; an independently arranged extra night in Arusha can make the end of the journey more relaxed.
