Day 1

JRO → Arusha

Your driver welcomes you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and takes you to Arusha, a journey of about an hour depending on traffic and your hotel location. The road passes cultivated countryside and busy local settlements before reaching the town beneath Mount Meru. After checking in, take time to rest, enjoy the garden or unpack the essentials for your safari. If you arrive early, a short stroll around the hotel grounds is a gentle way to stretch after the flight; there is no need to fit in a busy excursion. Over dinner or at a convenient briefing time, your guide explains tomorrow's Tarangire departure, checks dietary requirements and answers questions about travelling with children or camera equipment.

Arusha is the starting point for many northern Tanzania safaris because the road network connects it with Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. On clear days, Mount Meru gives the town a dramatic backdrop, although cloud often covers the summit. The altitude keeps evenings cooler than many travellers expect after landing in tropical Tanzania. Keep a light fleece handy and organise a small day bag with sunscreen, binoculars and reusable water bottles. Your main luggage can stay packed tonight, making tomorrow's first safari departure easier.

Tarangire

After breakfast, meet your guide and drive south from Arusha towards Tarangire National Park, usually about two to two and a half hours to the entrance. Roadside farms and villages gradually give way to broader, drier country. Once inside, slow down for a game drive through baobab-studded landscapes, keeping watch for elephants, giraffes and impala. Your guide follows current conditions rather than a fixed wildlife checklist, pausing where there is something worth understanding. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated spot, then continue exploring the river country and open woodland. In the late afternoon, travel to your accommodation in the Tarangire area for dinner and a first evening reflecting on what you have seen.

Tarangire National Park is especially well known for elephants and its impressive baobabs, but the variety of habitat is part of its appeal. During the dry season, broadly June to October, the river can draw animals from surrounding areas as other water sources shrink. Rain transforms the scenery and disperses some wildlife, while bringing fresh grass and rewarding birdwatching. Neither season guarantees particular sightings. A brimmed hat and breathable clothing help with warm daytime temperatures; a light long-sleeved shirt also protects against sun and dust. Ask your guide before standing in the vehicle, especially near wildlife.

Day 3

Karatu / Manyara

Have breakfast before leaving the Tarangire area for Lake Manyara National Park, with the drive bringing you towards the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment. Enter a landscape that feels noticeably greener, where groundwater forest offers shade and monkeys may move through the trees. Your guide explores the permitted routes, looking for elephants, bushbuck and birdlife while explaining how this narrow park changes between forest and lakeshore habitats. Stop for a picnic lunch and continue at a pace suited to the day's sightings and road conditions. Later, climb into the cooler farming country around Karatu, where you settle into your lodge and enjoy dinner before tomorrow's journey towards the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara is a shallow alkaline lake whose shoreline and bird concentrations vary considerably with rainfall and water levels. Flamingos may be present, but they are not a dependable year-round feature, and the park's famous tree-climbing lions are equally elusive. The forest itself is a worthwhile contrast to Tarangire's open country, with birds and primates rewarding careful observation. Karatu sits above the hotter lowlands, making evenings pleasantly cool. Carry binoculars for distant lakeshore birds, and keep a light waterproof layer accessible during wetter months. Your guide will adjust the drive if seasonal flooding limits access to particular tracks.

Day 4

Central Serengeti

An early breakfast sets you up for the journey through the Ngorongoro highlands and onwards to the Central Serengeti. The road climbs through greener slopes before dropping towards wide grasslands, with viewpoints and comfort stops fitted around the driving day. Carry a warm layer for the highlands and keep your camera nearby as the scenery opens out. After the park-entry formalities, the journey becomes a game drive, with possible sightings of gazelles, zebras and predators depending on the season and route. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route, then continue towards your camp in the central area. Arrive with time to settle in before dinner, listening as the sounds of the plains replace those of the road.

The Serengeti is not one uniform stretch of grass: river valleys, rocky kopjes and acacia woodland create distinct habitats across the ecosystem. Central Seronera supports resident wildlife, making this area useful for a Serengeti safari even when the main Great Migration herds are elsewhere. Their location follows rain and grazing rather than a fixed calendar. Today's transfer is a substantial overland journey, so a cushion or folded layer can make rougher sections more comfortable. Keep valuables protected from dust and avoid packing every lens deep in your main bag; wildlife may appear before you reach camp.

Day 5

Serengeti

Leave early with breakfast arranged around the morning drive, when cooler temperatures often encourage animal movement. Your guide builds a full day around what is happening locally, perhaps searching riverine trees for a leopard or following open grassland where cheetahs may hunt. There is time to watch behaviour rather than simply collect sightings: giraffes browsing, baboons interacting or vultures circling can all reveal another part of the ecosystem. Take a picnic lunch at a designated stopping place, then explore another section of the central area as conditions allow. Return to camp before dark for dinner and a conversation about the day's discoveries. Your guide also confirms the early departure arrangements for tomorrow's journey towards Ngorongoro.

A full-day Serengeti safari allows flexibility, but wildlife remains wild and predators can spend many hours resting out of sight. Resident animals make the Central Serengeti rewarding across the year, while seasonal wildebeest and zebra movements add another layer when the herds are nearby. The broadly wetter months can bring greener backgrounds and dramatic skies; dry months often mean dust and stronger midday glare. Carry more water than you think you need, alongside sunscreen and a spare camera battery. Respecting quiet at sightings helps everyone hear your guide and notice subtle movement in the grass.

Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater

Start very early with breakfast or a packed breakfast arranged by camp, then leave the Central Serengeti for Ngorongoro. Your guide plans the earliest practical crater descent after the transfer and entry formalities; a true dawn descent depends on where you slept and cannot be assumed from a central Serengeti overnight. Once on the crater floor, follow tracks between grassland, wetland and woodland, looking for buffaloes, zebras and the predators that share this enclosed landscape. With luck, you may spot a distant black rhino. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing the game drive within the permitted visit. Climb back to the highlands afterwards and settle into accommodation in the Ngorongoro or Karatu area for dinner.

Ngorongoro Crater is a volcanic caldera whose varied habitats support a remarkable concentration of resident wildlife. It is not a zoo, and sightings of individual species, particularly rhinos, are never assured. Conditions can change quickly between the cool rim and warmer floor, so dress in layers rather than a single heavy jacket. Keep binoculars accessible for animals well away from the track. Today combines a substantial road transfer with crater exploration, making an organised early departure important; your guide will explain the timing clearly the previous evening.

Day 7

Fly Arusha → Zanzibar (ZNZ)

After breakfast, travel to the confirmed departure point for your charter connection to Arusha. Your team will confirm the airstrip and transfer timing beforehand, since the overnight location and aviation arrangements determine this part of the day. In Arusha, connect with the scheduled flight to Zanzibar, keeping your essential documents and medication in your hand luggage throughout. On arrival at Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ), meet your driver for the journey to your beachfront hotel. Lunch arrangements follow the connection times, and the remaining afternoon is yours to settle in, walk along the shore or enjoy the pool. Dinner brings a change of atmosphere, with sea air replacing the cool highland evening of the night before.

A safari and Zanzibar holiday works best when the flight day is kept free of ambitious sightseeing plans. Small aircraft and scheduled services may have different baggage allowances, so confirm the arrangements before leaving the mainland camps. Your beach base may be Nungwi in the north or Paje on the east coast, as agreed in your booking; the two areas have different tides and seaside rhythms. Paje's shoreline changes markedly with the tide, while swimming everywhere still requires local advice. Keep beach clothes separate from your safari layers so you can change comfortably after arrival.

Day 8

Zanzibar — Stone Town

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a day exploring Zanzibar beyond the beach. Visit a spice-growing area to see familiar kitchen ingredients as living plants, with your host explaining their uses and offering opportunities to smell or taste produce when available. Continue to Stone Town for a guided heritage walk through narrow lanes, past carved doors and buildings shaped by the island's trading history. Your guide can suggest a suitable lunch stop, with lunch arranged separately from your hotel meals. The walk moves at a comfortable pace, allowing shade breaks and time for questions rather than rushing between monuments. Return to your beach hotel later in the day for dinner and a quieter evening by the sea.

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with African, Arab, Indian and European influences woven into its architecture and history. Its story also includes the painful legacy of slavery, which deserves thoughtful explanation rather than a hurried photograph. Zanzibar's spice traditions reflect its Indian Ocean trading connections, although crops and demonstrations vary between farms and seasons. Wear comfortable shoes for uneven lanes and lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees in town and villages. Carry water, ask before photographing people, and bring a light rain layer if showers are forecast.

Day 9

Zanzibar — beach day

Let breakfast set the pace today rather than an alarm for a game drive. Spend the morning on the sand, by the pool or reading in the shade, with the freedom to do very little after the mainland safari. If you would like an outing, ask your hotel team about optional snorkelling or a sunset dhow cruise, checking the conditions and arrangements before booking. Neither activity needs to be added for the day to feel complete. Find a convenient lunch spot independently, then return to an easy afternoon of swimming where locally advised or walking along the beach. Finish with dinner at your hotel and time to enjoy your final Zanzibar evening without packing it with appointments.

Zanzibar beach holidays follow the tides as much as the clock. On the east coast around Paje, low water can reveal broad stretches of sand and reef flats, while Nungwi has a different tidal pattern but still requires attention to local sea conditions. Coral areas are living habitats, so avoid standing on coral or disturbing marine life if you snorkel. Wind and visibility vary by season and can change quickly, meaning boat trips are always weather-dependent. Use sun protection, carry drinking water and follow your boat crew's safety instructions. Keep swimwear for beach and pool areas when stepping into nearby villages.

Day 10

ZNZ → departure

Enjoy breakfast at your beach hotel, then shape the final hours around your confirmed flight time. An early flight means a straightforward checkout and transfer; an evening departure may allow a last beach walk or a quiet morning beside the pool. Any use of your room after the normal checkout time needs to be agreed with the hotel rather than assumed. Your driver collects you with enough time for the journey to Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ), allowing for traffic and airline check-in requirements. Keep passports and onward travel details ready, and place any damp beach clothes separately from your documents and electronics. Your safari and beach itinerary ends at the airport, where you continue with your booked onward journey.

Transfers from Nungwi or Paje are longer than those from Stone Town, and road conditions can affect the schedule even when the distance looks modest on a map. Confirm the pickup time the evening before rather than planning it around an optimistic driving estimate. If you have an evening flight, stay within easy reach of the hotel instead of taking a distant last-minute excursion. A change of clothes in your hand luggage makes the airport journey more comfortable after time in the coastal heat. Leave shells and coral on the shore, taking photographs rather than pieces of the beach home.
