Arusha to Lake Natron — down into the Rift Valley
We collect you from your Arusha hotel after breakfast and head towards Lake Natron via Mto wa Mbu and Engaruka. The drive takes about five to six hours, with rough tracks on the final stretch and a lunch stop along the way. As the Great Rift Valley opens around you, look for Maasai herders moving livestock across the plains, dust devils and perhaps giraffe in the distance. Ol Doinyo Lengai’s distinctive cone gradually dominates the skyline. After checking into your tented camp, join a local guide for the Ngare Sero waterfall walk, wading through streams inside the gorge as conditions permit. Back at camp, eat an early dinner, prepare your climbing kit and get a few hours of sleep before the midnight start.
This two-day Ol Doinyo Lengai climb is a compact, strenuous journey rather than a leisurely escape: a long drive leads straight into a night ascent with limited rest. The Lake Natron area is hot, dry and exposed, while the gorge brings slippery rocks and moving water. Bring secure footwear suitable for wading, and keep electronics protected from splashes. Your guides assess local conditions before the waterfall walk and volcano climb; changes are possible, especially after rain or when volcanic activity raises safety concerns.
