Udzungwa is part of the Eastern Arc mountains, a chain of ancient forests that scientists sometimes call 'the Galápagos of Africa' because so many plants and animals here exist nowhere else. It is a hiker's park: there are no roads inside, only forest trails.

Discover Udzungwa Mountains National Park
The best-known walk climbs to the Sanje Falls, where the river plunges about 170 metres through the trees. From the top there are wide views over the Kilombero valley — and a cool pool to rest your feet in after the climb.
The forest is famous for its primates. Look for the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje mangabey, both found only in these mountains, along with black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys. Bird lovers come for rare forest species too.
Udzungwa pairs perfectly with Mikumi: game drives on the plains one day, a forest hike to a waterfall the next. Longer, multi-day trails are also possible for keen walkers.
