Mkomazi is northern Tanzania's best-kept secret. Tucked against the Kenyan border in the shadow of the Pare and Usambara mountains, it is a park of red earth, baobabs, commiphora scrub and wide views towards Kilimanjaro on a clear morning. It feels nothing like the Serengeti — and that is exactly the point.

Discover Mkomazi National Park
The park joins Kenya's Tsavo West across the border, forming one large dry-country ecosystem. That brings species that are scarce elsewhere in Tanzania: gerenuk standing on their hind legs to browse, fringe-eared oryx and lesser kudu, alongside elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo.
Mkomazi is also one of Tanzania's most important conservation stories. A fenced sanctuary protects a breeding population of eastern black rhino, and the park has long supported an African wild dog breeding and reintroduction programme. Visits to the conservation projects need to be arranged in advance — we take care of that for you.
Because so few travellers come here, game drives are quiet and unhurried. It works beautifully as a two- or three-night add-on between Arusha or Kilimanjaro and the Usambara mountains, the coast or Zanzibar.
