Mikumi is the southern circuit's open-plains park. The Mkata floodplain at its heart is wide, grassy and dotted with baobabs and palms, ringed by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains — so the game viewing feels familiar to anyone who loves the northern parks, without the crowds.

Discover Mikumi National Park

Because it sits beside the main highway west of Morogoro, Mikumi is the simplest southern park to reach from Dar es Salaam. Many guests combine it with the forests of the Udzungwa Mountains next door, or with boat safaris in Nyerere to the south.

Game drives are short and productive: herds of zebra, buffalo and wildebeest graze the floodplain, elephants move between the woodland and the water, and lions often rest in the shade along the tracks. The hippo pools are a highlight at any time of day.

In the miombo woodland on the park's southern side you may see eland, greater kudu and sable antelope — species that are rare in the north — so a Mikumi safari adds real variety to a Tanzania trip.

Wildlife in Mikumi National Park

  • Lion, including prides that rest on the plains
  • Elephant, buffalo and giraffe
  • Zebra, wildebeest and impala on the Mkata floodplain
  • Eland, greater kudu and sable antelope in the woodland
  • Hippo and crocodile at the hippo pools
  • Over 400 bird species

Every drive is different — sightings are never guaranteed, and your guide reads the bush as you go.

Excursions and activities in Mikumi National Park

  • Mkata floodplain game drives

Open grassland and short tracks make Mikumi easy and rewarding — ideal for a first safari or a family with younger children.

  • Hippo pools

A permanent pool where hippos wallow, crocodiles bask and storks, herons and fish eagles hunt along the edges.

  • Woodland drives for rare antelope

Head into the southern miombo for a chance of sable, greater kudu and eland.

  • Combine with Udzungwa

Spend a day hiking to the Sanje waterfall in the neighbouring Udzungwa Mountains — a perfect mix of safari and forest.

Travel time to Mikumi National Park

  • Dar es Salaam → Mikumi: ~5 hours by road (or a short charter flight).

Travel tip from our guides about Mikumi National Park

The highway crosses the park, so the main road can be busy — we drive the quieter loops away from it, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

How long to stay? Two nights for a full day of game drives. Three nights if you add a day in the Udzungwa Mountains.

Best time to visit Mikumi National Park

Jun–Oct for dry-season game viewing; Nov–May for green landscapes and birds.

  • Jun–Oct: the dry season. Short grass and thinner bush make wildlife easiest to find.
  • Nov–May: green, lush and great for birds; heaviest rain usually falls in March and April.
