Kilimanjaro is a 5,895 m free-standing volcano — the highest peak in Africa and the tallest walkable summit on Earth (no technical climbing required). Most safari guests see it from the plane on arrival; many extend their trip to climb it or, more modestly, walk its lower slopes.

Discover Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
The mountain sits inside Kilimanjaro National Park, an hour's drive from Arusha. The town of Moshi is the traditional climbing base and the cultural home of the Chagga people, whose coffee farms terrace the southern foothills.
We co-ordinate full climbs through partner outfitters who meet KPAP porter-welfare standards (fair wages, weight limits, hot meals at altitude). It's the only kind of climb we'll book.
Wildlife in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
- Black-and-white colobus monkey in the rainforest belt
- Bushbuck, duiker, tree hyrax
- Lammergeier and white-necked raven above 4,000 m
Every drive is different — sightings are never guaranteed, and your guide reads the bush as you go.
Excursions and activities in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
Machame route (6–7 days)
Tanzania's most popular trekking route. Scenic, demanding, with the best acclimatisation profile of the main routes.
Lemosho / Northern Circuit (8–9 days)
Higher summit success rate thanks to more acclimatisation days. The longest, quietest approach.
Marangu (5–6 days) — 'Coca-Cola route'
The only route with hut accommodation. Lower summit success because of the short profile.
Materuni waterfall & coffee tour
Half-day from Moshi — guided walk to an 80-metre waterfall and a Chagga coffee farm. Excellent rest-day option.
Travel time to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
- JRO sits in its shadow — Arusha is ~50 min away.
Travel tip from our guides about Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
Book your climb to start AFTER your safari, not before. If you summit and then drive into the Serengeti you'll spend the first two days in the truck recovering — and miss the wildlife you came for.
How long to stay? A full climb takes 6–9 days plus a recovery night. Day-trippers can do Materuni or the Shira Plateau (1 day) without acclimatising.
Best time to visit Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
Jan–Mar and Jun–Oct for climbing.
- Jan–early Mar and Jun–Oct: dry, stable, clearest summit views.
- Apr–May and Nov: rain on the lower slopes, much smaller crowds, snow on summit.
